Lift Stations

Lift stations pump wastewater from low areas to higher elevations so it can continue toward treatment.

What it means

When gravity cannot carry wastewater to the next point, a wet well collects flow and pumps lift it into a force main or higher sewer. Lift stations need reliable pumps, level controls, alarms, backup power planning, and maintenance.

What operators watch

  • Pump cycling, wet-well level, alarms, and run time reveal station behavior.
  • Rags, grease, and grit can clog pumps or affect controls.
  • Failure can quickly create backups or sanitary sewer overflows.

Common exam traps

  • Confusing a lift station with a water booster station.
  • Ignoring wet-well ventilation and confined-space hazards.
  • Assuming redundant pumps remove the need for inspection.

Field example

If one pump runs much longer than the other, operators may check pump capacity, check valves, controls, and force-main conditions.
