Wastewater Treatment · Lesson 6

Dissolved Oxygen Control

Dissolved oxygen supports aerobic biological treatment but must be balanced against energy use and process needs.

What it means

Aerobic microorganisms need oxygen to consume organic matter and support nitrification. Too little DO can cause poor treatment or odors. Too much aeration wastes energy and can affect settling or denitrification goals in nutrient-removal systems.

What operators watch

  • DO setpoints depend on process goals and basin location.
  • Blowers and aeration systems are major energy users.
  • DO probes need cleaning, calibration, and sensible interpretation.

Common exam traps

  • Assuming the same DO target applies everywhere.
  • Forgetting nitrification generally needs sufficient oxygen.
  • Ignoring probe maintenance when readings look suspicious.

Field example

A sudden DO drop may reflect increased organic loading, blower problems, diffuser issues, or instrument fouling.
