Wastewater Treatment · Lesson 8

Wasting and Sludge Age

Wasting removes excess biomass and helps control sludge age, solids inventory, and biological process stability.

What it means

Microorganisms grow as they consume waste. If operators never remove excess solids, the system becomes overloaded with biomass. Wasting removes solids from the process and helps control MCRT or sludge age.

What operators watch

  • Wasting changes do not show their full effect instantly.
  • Sludge age affects nitrification, settleability, and process stability.
  • WAS flow, solids concentration, MLSS, and inventory all matter.

Common exam traps

  • Confusing wasting with returning sludge.
  • Making large wasting changes without tracking trends.
  • Assuming low MLSS or high MLSS is always good or bad.

Field example

If sludge age is too low during cold weather, nitrification can fail because nitrifying organisms are washed out faster than they grow.
