Water Main Breaks

Main breaks interrupt service, waste water, reduce pressure, and can create contamination risks.

What it means

A main break can be caused by age, corrosion, pressure transients, soil movement, freezing, construction damage, or material failure. Response usually includes locating the break, controlling traffic, isolating the main, maintaining service where possible, repairing, flushing, disinfecting, and documenting.

What operators watch

  • Protect workers and the public before starting repair work.
  • Maintain positive pressure when possible to reduce contamination risk.
  • Follow sampling and return-to-service procedures after repair.

Common exam traps

  • Treating a break as only a maintenance problem.
  • Forgetting pressure and water-quality implications.
  • Skipping documentation and customer communication.

Field example

A break near a busy road may require traffic control, utility locating, valve isolation, repair coordination, and customer notices.
