Water operator math tutorial

Filter Loading Rate

Divide flow by filter surface area for gpm per square foot.

Loading rate is how much water each square foot of filter surface passes. Operators watch it to keep filters inside their design range.

Surface area is length times width, so many questions give the filter dimensions rather than the area.

The formula

loading rate (gpm/ft²) = flow (gpm) ÷ filter area (ft²)

VariableUnit
Flowgpm
Filter surface areaft²
Result: Loading rategpm/ft²

Applies to: Water Treatment.

Common exam tip: Area first, rate second. Write the area down before you divide.

Calculator

Loading rate

2 gpm/ft²

  1. 1. 900 gpm ÷ 450 ft² = 2 gpm/ft²

For instructional use. Results assume the standard conversion factors shown on this page. Actual field calculations may need chemical strength, density, temperature, and other adjustments, so check your plant’s procedures.

Worked examples

Example 1

900 gpm passes through a 450 ft² filter.

  1. 900 gpm ÷ 450 ft² = 2 gpm/ft²

Answer: 2 gpm/ft²

Example 2

1,500 gpm passes through a 600 ft² filter.

  1. 1,500 gpm ÷ 600 ft² = 2.5 gpm/ft²

Answer: 2.5 gpm/ft²

Common mistakes

Wrong result: 0.5 gpm/ft²

dividing area by flow (upside down)

Wrong result: 405,000 gpm/ft²

multiplying instead of dividing

Practice questions

  1. 1. 1,100 gpm through a 500 ft² filter. Loading rate?

    • A0.45 gpm/ft²
    • B550,000 gpm/ft²
    • C2.2 gpm/ft²
    • D22 gpm/ft²
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: C. 1,100 gpm ÷ 500 ft² = 2.2 gpm/ft² Answer: 2.2 gpm/ft². A common slip is dividing area by flow (upside down), which gives 0.45 gpm/ft².

  2. 2. 2,000 gpm through an 800 ft² filter. Loading rate?

    • A0.4 gpm/ft²
    • B1,600,000 gpm/ft²
    • C25 gpm/ft²
    • D2.5 gpm/ft²
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: D. 2,000 gpm ÷ 800 ft² = 2.5 gpm/ft² Answer: 2.5 gpm/ft². A common slip is dividing area by flow (upside down), which gives 0.4 gpm/ft².

  3. 3. 1,750 gpm through a 500 ft² filter. Loading rate?

    • A3.5 gpm/ft²
    • B0.29 gpm/ft²
    • C875,000 gpm/ft²
    • D35 gpm/ft²
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: A. 1,750 gpm ÷ 500 ft² = 3.5 gpm/ft² Answer: 3.5 gpm/ft². A common slip is dividing area by flow (upside down), which gives 0.29 gpm/ft².
