CCTV Pipe Inspection

Closed-circuit television inspection lets operators see defects, blockages, and service connections inside sewer pipes.

What it means

CCTV inspection uses a camera crawler or push camera to document pipe condition. It can identify roots, cracks, offsets, grease, infiltration, collapsed pipe, and illegal connections. Findings guide cleaning, repair, rehabilitation, and capital planning.

What operators watch

  • Clean pipes before inspection when debris blocks the view.
  • Record defect location, severity, direction, and pipe information consistently.
  • CCTV supports both emergency troubleshooting and long-term asset management.

Common exam traps

  • Assuming CCTV fixes the problem instead of diagnosing it.
  • Ignoring the need for accurate footage or location references.
  • Forgetting that flow conditions can limit inspection quality.

Field example

A recurring sinkhole near a sewer line may lead to CCTV inspection that finds a cracked or collapsed pipe segment.
