Sewer Overflows

Sanitary sewer overflows release untreated wastewater and require quick response, cleanup, documentation, and reporting.

What it means

An overflow can result from blockages, pump failure, power loss, I&I, collapsed pipe, or capacity problems. Response priorities include public safety, stopping or reducing the overflow, protecting waterways, cleanup, notification, and recordkeeping.

What operators watch

  • Find and stop the cause as quickly and safely as possible.
  • Document start time, end time, location, estimated volume, cause, and response.
  • Reporting requirements depend on the jurisdiction and permit.

Common exam traps

  • Focusing only on cleanup and forgetting reporting.
  • Ignoring public contact and waterway protection.
  • Assuming all overflows have the same cause.

Field example

A blocked main causing flow from a manhole may require bypass pumping, jetting, traffic control, cleanup, and agency notification.
