Flow, Velocity, and Area (Q = V × A)

Find flow in cfs from cross-sectional area and velocity.

Q = V × A links the flow in a pipe or channel to how fast the water moves and the size of the cross section it moves through.

Use consistent units. Feet and seconds give flow in cubic feet per second (cfs), which you can then convert to gpm or MGD.

The formula

Q (cfs) = area (ft²) × velocity (ft/s)

VariableUnit
Cross-sectional areaft²
Velocityft/s
Result: Flowcfs

Conversion factors used: 1 cfs = 448.8 gpm; 1 cfs = 0.646 MGD.

Applies to: Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Treatment, Collection Systems.

Common exam tip: If you need gpm or MGD, finish the cfs answer first, then convert.

Calculator

Flow

30 cfs

  1. 1. 12.5 ft² × 2.4 ft/s = 30 cfs

For instructional use. Results assume the standard conversion factors shown on this page. Actual field calculations may need chemical strength, density, temperature, and other adjustments, so check your plant’s procedures.

Worked examples

Example 1

A channel has 12.5 ft² of flow area and 2.4 ft/s velocity.

  1. 12.5 ft² × 2.4 ft/s = 30 cfs

Answer: 30 cfs

Example 2

A pipe has 3.5 ft² of area and water moves at 1.8 ft/s.

  1. 3.5 ft² × 1.8 ft/s = 6.3 cfs

Answer: 6.3 cfs

Common mistakes

Wrong result: 5.21 cfs

dividing area by velocity

Wrong result: 13,464 cfs

reporting gpm while labeling it cfs

Practice questions

  1. 1. Area 8 ft², velocity 2.5 ft/s. Flow in cfs?

    • A3.2 cfs
    • B8,976 cfs
    • C20 cfs
    • D200 cfs
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. 8 ft² × 2.5 ft/s = 20 cfs Answer: 20 cfs. A common slip is dividing area by velocity, which gives 3.2 cfs.

  2. 2. Area 15.2 ft², velocity 1.5 ft/s. Flow in cfs?

    • A10.13 cfs
    • B10,232.64 cfs
    • C228 cfs
    • D22.8 cfs
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. 15.2 ft² × 1.5 ft/s = 22.8 cfs Answer: 22.8 cfs. A common slip is dividing area by velocity, which gives 10.13 cfs.

  3. 3. Area 4.8 ft², velocity 3.1 ft/s. Flow in cfs?

    • A14.88 cfs
    • B1.55 cfs
    • C6,678.14 cfs
    • D148.8 cfs
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. 4.8 ft² × 3.1 ft/s = 14.88 cfs Answer: 14.88 cfs. A common slip is dividing area by velocity, which gives 1.55 cfs.
